For some time I have been reflecting on the sum of the Gospel. While the NT describes it as "Christ crucified", that phrase is shorthand for the full person and work of Christ.
Christ means Messiah -- the Person of Jesus, God and man, his life, death, resurrection, exaltation. His crucifixion is the heart of his redeeming work, the focal point of his achievement -- but the NT speaks of a multifaceted work of Christ and applies each element distinctly.
We have 2/3 of the Gospels devoted to the life and person of Christ. This is more than a preface to the passion accounts. The four evangelists are telling us about Jesus -- all that he is, his character, his trustworthiness, his credentials. The epistles focus on his cross-work, but not exclusively.
Our church is now walking through a series on "The Complete Jesus." We are exploring his glorious person and his full work for us, all of which comes to bear at the hill called Golgotha.
Our sequence will be:
- Jesus is God the Son,
- Jesus is true man,
- Jesus incarnate revealed God,
- Jesus mission was to seek and save the lost,
- Jesus was obedient to death,
- Jesus broke the power of death,
- Jesus is exalted to God's right hand,
- Jesus sent the Spirit,
- Jesus intercedes for us,
- Jesus appears at the end of the age,
- Jesus is Judge and KIng
We are four weeks into the series. You can check out our website HERE if you want to follow.
